Aluminium Foil or Plastic Wrap: Which is Better for the environment?
Our society is beginning to see the affects that we have on our earth and are trying to be more eco-friendly. With this trend towards green living, many people have questions about which products are environmentally friendly and which products should be avoided. One such question involves the use of plastic wraps and aluminium foil. Is either of these products better for the environment? While it may seem that all wraps of this type are created equal, these products have different impacts on the environment. Let us first take a look at plastic wrap.
Plastic wrap is made from a petroleum-based plastic. Petroleum is, of course, a fossil fuel and is therefore not considered a renewable resource. Because plastic wrap is intended to cling to the item it is meant to protect, it is only used once and then thrown away. It cannot be recycled to be used again. There is also some evidence shown in studies that indicate that the chemicals used in the plastic itself can leach into the foods that we eat and may cause certain developmental and hormonal issues. Alternatives to plastic wrap such as aluminium foil reduce the waste and remove potentially harmful effects on humans.
Aluminium foil is used in a similar manner to plastic wrap. Because it can be recycled in most areas, it has an environmentally friendly edge over plastic wrap. In areas that do not have recycling for foil, it can be reused by individuals, which is both eco-friendly and cost effective. It can be washed, dried, and stored to be used again, even several times. With this in mind, it should be mentioned that plastic wrap has a lower manufacturing carbon footprint. A ton of aluminium uses 170 million British thermal units and plastic wrap uses only about 17 percent of that amount.
Where does this leave us in the debate? Which product is really better for the environment? The answer really depends on the consumer. Although plastic wrap has lower greenhouse gas emissions, aluminium foil can be recycled or reused. Foil can be made using recycled aluminium, which can reduce the manufacturing impact on the environment, and the use of natural resources. It can be used and recycled continually, unlike plastic, which breaks down over time. Some companies are already using 100% recycled aluminium in their products. If we choose to recycle, foil can be better for the environment.

I think you would like to keep food fresh and tasty with minimum effort then you can easily cover it with a colored plastic wrap that will seal your food and keep it from getting rotten. It will also be better to freeze the food so that you can eat it at some other time. I like how the colored plastic wrap looks, it just makes my food look more tasty!
