How Important is Packaging Design?

When it comes to physical appearance, models and actors understand that image is everything.  Television commercials frequently sell product by using an attractive person as their spokesperson and show them in an appealing location because they too understand the need for a good image. While beautiful people in exotic locations in television commercials may drive in some potential customers, there is a more effective solution that will present the image of both your product and your company.  Packaging may seem, at first glance, to be a strictly utilitarian necessity for your products, but a good packaging design can sell your product they way few things can.

Some people remain under the misguided assumption that packaging design is not really that important.  Think of your experiences while shopping and you will understand that it is rather important.  If two products are priced similarly and offer the same benefits to the consumer, he or she will usually choose between the two on looks alone.  If the product packaging appeals to them, they may even pay more for the product.  Just as we tend to judge people by the first impression they make or a book by its title, we also judge the products we consume.  This information can be used to your company’s advantage.

Consumers want their products to match their particular lifestyle and personality.  If you product is eco-friendly, for example, and would appeal to those who are concerned about the environment, your packaging design should clearly reflect that.  By using recycled materials or designing a natural look for your product, your customer will zero in on it while shopping and easily identify that it as an eco-friendly project.  Your design should also include the information that will answer all of the customer’s basic questions.  They need to know what the product is, how it will improve my life, and why it is better than other products available.

Developing packaging designs that stand out will help to create brand visibility.  For instance, if you have a beauty line, the packaging of all of your products should be similar and recognizable.  When customers really love a product, they will often look for other products made by the same company.  Having a great design for all of your packaging increases the chances that the customer will recognize your products.  The design of your packaging is important and can be the most effective marketing tool available.
